10 Packing Tips for a Stress-Free Move

10 Packing Tips for a Stress-Free Move

By The Cedar Vault Team · 7/28/2026

Moving is rarely anyone’s idea of fun, but a few simple habits make the difference between a chaotic weekend and a smooth one. These are the tips we find ourselves sharing most often with customers loading in at Cedar Vault Storage.

Before you pack

  1. Declutter first. Every box you do not pack is one you do not move or store. Donate or toss what you will not miss.
  2. Gather real supplies. Sturdy boxes in a couple of consistent sizes stack far better than mismatched ones. Add tape, bubble wrap, and a marker.
  3. Pack an essentials box you keep with you: chargers, tools, toiletries, and a change of clothes.

Packing the boxes

  1. Heavy items in small boxes, light items in large ones. Your back and your box bottoms will thank you.
  2. Fill every gap with soft goods so nothing shifts in transit.
  3. Label on the side, not the top, so you can read labels once boxes are stacked.

Loading the unit

  1. Disassemble what you can — bed frames and table legs — and bag the hardware, taped to the piece it belongs to.
  2. Store vertically where it is safe to, like mattresses and sofa cushions, to save floor space.
  3. Leave a center aisle so you can reach the back of the unit without unloading the front.
  4. Put what you will need soonest near the door, and keep a simple list of what is in the unit.

One last thing

Give yourself more time than you think you need, and do not be shy about asking for a hand. Our drive-up units let you load straight from the car, and our team is on site if you get stuck on whether the couch will fit through the door. Reserve your unit online, and moving day becomes just another Saturday.
